Moving in the direction of generating power from the renewable energy sources, Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (HAREDA) is encouraging private investors to set up projects in the fields of solar power, biomass, wind energy, small hydro and co-generation biomass power projects.

The agency invited proposals from private companies to harness small hydro power in three phases for generation of over 17-MW of power.

BANGALORE: Karnataka will unveil a renewable energy policy in a month or two to provide for a focussed effort to boost the renewable energy generation to tide over the power shortage by harnessing green energy.

The highlight of the policy is that it will envisage steps for doubling the renewable energy generation in the State from the present 2,000 MW to 4,000 MW in the next five years.

The government is set to make a policy on renewable energy to facilitate development of the sector to meet 10 percent of the country's total power demand by 2020.

The policy 'Renewable Energy Policy of Bangladesh' is expected to receive the green light from the council of advisers in two months, a senior official of Power Cell told The Daily Star on Wednesday.

When the builders of the Maple Ridge Wind farm spent $320 million to put nearly 200 wind turbines in upstate New York, the idea was to get paid for producing electricity.

But at times, regional electric lines have been so congested that Maple Ridge has been forced to shut down even with a brisk wind blowing.

That is a symptom of a broad national problem. Expansive dreams about renewable energy, like Al Gore's hope of replacing all fossil fuels in a decade, are bumping up against the reality of a power grid that cannot handle the new demands.

My neighbour was palpably proud of himself when he mentioned at a backyard barbeque he had bought a specialised fund that invested in a solar-energy company.

When he asked me what I thought of his well-intentioned investment, though, I had to play killjoy. Instead of patting him on the back, I told him it was a bad idea. While I sense that climate change is probably a man-made global problem that needs to be addressed by all of us, as investors we often pursue the wrong ideas.
