Over 11 million houses are lying unused and vacant in urban India reveals this new report on urban housing shortage for the 12th plan period (2012-17) released by the Ministry of Urban Housing and Poverty Alleviation.

The technical group on estimation of urban housing shortage for the Twelfth Plan (TG-12) was constituted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, with terms of reference are as: to review the methodology adopted for estimation of urban housing shortage and propose a sustainable and viable methodology; estimation of housing shortage and housing requirement at national and state level in urban areas during the 121th plan period; and to suggest a mechanism for strengthening the system of collection housing statistics and developing a national data base for urban areas.
