Nepal - Country overview
Renowned for its majestic Himalayas, Nepal is rich in its geographic, natural, and cultural diversity. Nepal has a population of 25 million, with approximately 85% of its population living in rural areas. The population is growing at a rate of 2.3% per year, and the ratio of population to arable land is one of the highest in the world. For the past decade, Nepal's development has been seriously constrained by political instability and violent insurgency. As a result of political and security problems, there has been a major disruption of livelihoods for millions of rural households, a significant increase in population migration to urban areas, and a steady loss of economic productivity.
