Applying the concept of human security to research on the consequences of mining-induced displacement and resettlement

The development of international mining projects is one of the most visible consequences of globalization. Mining activities undertaken by the private sectors of Europe and North America have recently been joined by companies from China, the Arabian Peninsula, and wealthy Asian countries. The extraction, transportation, and sale of mineral resources represent the most profitable global investments. Furthermore, mineral resources are an instrument for extending the influence of key players in international relations—nation states in the geopolitical dimension, and corporations in the sphere of international economy. The vast majority of mining projects are located in developing countries.
