Understanding the dynamics of food insecurity and vulnerability in Himachal Pradesh

This paper documents the main findings of the vulnerable profiling work carried out in the State of Himachal Pradesh, India, as a mean to support the planning of food security and livelihoods promoting interventions at the state level. The paper analyses the main characteristics and causes of food insecurity and vulnerability, seeking to identify who and where the vulnerable and food insecure are, why they are at risk of becoming food insecure and what options exist to reduce this risk.

Working with communities to conserve the Ganges river dolphin and the ecosystem

WWF establishes a project in 2001 to involve local communities in aquatic biodiversity conservation with dolphins as flagship species. Farida village in Uttar Pradesh was selected as local communities were most backward and highly dependent on the river sources for livelihood thereby directly impacting dolphin habitat.

International Campaign for justice in Bhopal

Warren Anderson, Chairman of Union Carbide Corporation at the time of the 1984 gas disaster in Bhopal is summoned along with UCC to appear before a court in Bhopal to face criminal charges of culpable homicide. Since 1992 he and the corporation have been refusing to appear and have been declared "absconders from justice".

Trees and water: smallholder agroforestry on irrigated lands in Northern India

This study used farmer-survey data, remote sensing, and hydrological modeling of the prevalent cropping systems to investigate the importance and role of the poplar trees within the agricultural landscape, and to estimate their water use. It was found that trees are currently grown on approximately 10% of the irrigated lands, which are located within the study area in northern India.
