Seeking justice

TWO MEMBERS of parliament, Rabi Ray and Kamal Morarka, and the National Working Group on Patent Laws, have each filed petitions in the Supreme Court, challenging the constitutionality of the Uruguay round of negotiations. The petitions, each running into about 140 pages, contend the agreement and the manner in which it was negotiated adversely affect the Indian people's rights to governance, medicine, health and food.

The petitions seek, among other things, consultation and consent of the states prior to ratification of the agreement; a complete and comprehensive statement before Parliament and a referendum before signing the agreement, and a complete statement to the President of India so that he can advise the government and refer the matter to the Supreme Court for advisory opinion.
