Capital pollution

A RECENT report by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) indicates that polluting industries in non-conforming areas are not solely responsible for the growing pollution in the Capital: established industrial estates are also to blame and the report emphasises the need for remedial action in them.

CII stresses the need to clean up the industrial estates through pollution control measures. It also underlines the problem posed by the industries in the non-conforming areas: "A significant number of them are highly hazardous and noxious, like plastic products, steel polishing, metal finishing...which has penetrated deep into residential areas. In the decade 1981-91, 39,000 more industrial units have sprung up but no industrial estate has been developed in Delhi, except the Narela complex for 1,800 units."
