This report contains the proceedings of the national workshop on forest fires, held at New Delhi on November 13 & 14, 2007.

Coal and limestone are the two major nonrenewable natural and economic resources of Meghalaya. These have been playing a significant role in the generation of income and employment in Meghalaya.

Business is under pressure to play a lead role in tackling climate change. If companies take action now it will allow the realisation of significant efficiency gains and cost savings. Recent research by KPMG in the UK indicates that many have only just begun to think through the implications of climate change for their own corporate strategies and most would welcome better guidance

The objectives of the National Rehabilitation and Resettlement Policy are: to minimise displacement and to promote,' as far as possible, non-displacing or least-displacing alternatives; to ensure adequate rehabilitation package and expeditious' implementation of the rehabilitation process with the active participation of the affected families; to ensure that special care is.

With a view to assessing the potential environmental impacts due to proposed activities, M/s Sarda Energy & Minerals Ltd., retained M/s Anacon Laboratories Pvt. Ltd., Nagpur to undertake Environmental Impact Assessment studies. The report envisages the assessment of the impact of various environmental components and its mitigation measures in order to minimize the adverse impacts.

Today's challenges provide the chance to develop global mechanisms for sustainable development. They can act as springboards towards higher resource productivity and efficiency, environmentally friendly technologies, and sustainable habits and lifestyles. The above discussion brings up a number of issues that require thorough considerations.
