December 1985: The Acoustical Society of India prepares a report on the need to legislate industrial and urban community noise pollution. The Environmental (Protection) Act, 1986, includes noise as an environmental pollutant for the first time.

February 1989: A committee constituted by the Central Pollution Control Board sets standards for noise pollution and suggests enforcement measures, based on those laid down by other countries, World Health Organization guidelines, existing Indian noise levels and the feasibility of the recommended measures.

December 1989: Acting on the committee's report, the MEF issues a notification on ambient air quality standards in respect of noise.

August 1990: Another notification prescribes noise limits for automobiles and domestic appliances and construction equipment to be achieved by 1992 and 1993, respectively.
