Access to justice still elusive for women

When 50-year-old Usha Vashisht received a lewd call on her mobile phone she ignored it. But soon it became a regular feature. Then she decided to file a complaint with Delhi police's anti-obscene cell.  “To my surprise, even after innumerable attempts no one answered the dedicated helpline number 1096,” she recalls. Then she filed a complaint with the police control room. “I was assured that I will be informed of any updates in the case but the officer concerned never called back,” she says.

With impacts of climate change becoming increasingly visible locally, identification of areas vulnerable to climate change risks is emerging as an urgent policy need. The present study responds to this requirement by identifying the most vulnerable villages using a rapid, cost-effective and highresolution methodology. We provide a preliminary, village-level, climate-related vulnerability assessment of the rural communities in Sikkim, India.

Continued warming could transform Greater Yellowstone fire regimes by mid-21st century

Climate change is likely to alter wildfire regimes, but the magnitude and timing of potential climate-driven changes in regional fire regimes are not well understood. We considered how the occurrence, size, and spatial location of large fires might respond to climate projections in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem (GYE) (Wyoming), a large wildland ecosystem dominated by conifer forests and characterized by infrequent, high-severity fire.

Comparative genomics of xylose-fermenting fungi for enhanced biofuel production

Cellulosic biomass is an abundant and underused substrate for biofuel production. The inability of many microbes to metabolize the pentose sugars abundant within hemicellulose creates specific challenges for microbial biofuel production from cellulosic material. Although engineered strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae can use the pentose xylose, the fermentative capacity pales in comparison with glucose, limiting the economic feasibility of industrial fermentations.

Paying our respects at a CO2 graveyard

2822

There are more cows than people here in Nirranda South, three hours south-west of Melbourne, making it the perfect spot to test a technology that remains hugely controversial. I am at a facility run by Australia's Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC). If anyone can convince the public that carbon capture and storage can reliably reduce carbon dioxide emissions it's these guys. Even Friends of the Earth, Australia - which opposes the approach - has grudging respect for the research done here.

Community monitoring of rural health services in Maharashtra

What happens when villagers are allowed to monitor their local public health facilities? India’s National Rural Health Mission is making such accountability a reality through its community-based monitoring initiative. This article presents the first three rounds of data collected by village health committee members in Maharashtra’s 225 pilot villages. The obstacles encountered by the process and its strengths and limitations are also discussed.
