Workers missing from tea gardens of north Bengal and Assam

Lured by the relatively high wage rate of Rs 130 per day under the central government's flagship rural job guarantee scheme, workers of the north Bengal and Assam tea gardens are giving regular work a miss. The tea industry is in the red, given that mid-June to October is the peak plucking season. Under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), rural workers are guaranteed 100 days of employment a year at Rs 130 per day.

Every year, the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests spends substantial amount of money on the upkeep of national parks, biosphere reserves, sanctuaries and zoos. But there is little information available on how well the funds are spent. Now the Central Information Commission (CIC) has asked the ministry to assess and publish the impact of the government funds spent on these places.

Efficient, practical and accurate estimates of population parameters are a necessary basis for effective conservation action to meet biodiversity targets. The brown hare is representative of many European farmland species: historically widespread and abundant but having undergone rapid declines as a result of agricultural intensification. As a priority species in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan, it has national targets for population increase that are part of wider national environmental indicators.

Green tribunal seeks details on radiation from thermal power plants

A recent order of the National Green Tribunal could impact the clearances being granted to coal-fired thermal power plants. The tribunal has asked the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to make a detailed assessment of the supposed radiation caused by the thermal power plants in the country. Last week, the tribunal asked MoEF to get prescribed national standards from Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) within a year on the permissible levels of nuclear radiation in residential, industrial and ecologically sensitive areas.

The Jabalpur Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed the Centre to identify a laboratory in the country to analyse the waste from Union Carbide and prepare an environmental impact assessment on the impact of burning it in Nagpur.

Special enclosure at Pench for orphaned tiger cubs

In an effort to rehabilitate three orphaned tiger cubs, the Centre has decided to erect a four hectare open enclosure at the Pench Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra to house and train them.


The three cubs, two females and one male, were found in Dhaba forest in Chandrapur in 2009, after they were separated from their mother. They were then brought to the Bor wildlife sanctuary near Wardha.

'Chemplast claims about zero liquid discharge false'

Twice in the past five months, residents near Mettur in Tamil Nadu have noticed liquid seeping from under the compound wall of Chemplast Sanmar’s PVC plant into the drain running alongside the wall. There was a terrible smell coming from the drain. The recent rains had flushed out the effluent and due to the gradient, the effluent flooded some fields that had been freshly planted with millets. Residents took water samples both times from the drain. The results from the samples taken in May show high levels of chemicals including carcinogens in the water.

greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and

global team of technological experts and
scientists reviewed over 160 scenarios on
the potential of six RE technologies and
compiled a report entitled ‘Special

approved by member countries of IPCC.
