India's investment in research and development activities in 1990-91 was Rs 4,186.83 crores. This was just 0.89 per cent of the country's gross domestic product - a paltry figure compared to investments in'this field by member nations of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. The government continues to shoulder the responsibility for making such investments, with the private sector contributing only 12.6 per cent of the total.
