The Little Green Data Book 2016

The Little Green Data Book provides about 50 indicators for more than 200 countries. Several of these indicators have the potential to measure progress on the SDGs. These indicators measure the use of resources and the way human activities affect both the natural and the built environment. They include measures of natural resources (forest, water, and cultivable land) as well as degradation (pollution, deforestation, loss of habitat, and loss of biodiversity).

World Health Statistics 2016: Monitoring health for the SDGs

The World Health Statistics series is WHO’s annual compilation of health statistics for its 194 Member States. World Health Statistics 2016 focuses on the proposed health and health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and associated targets. It represents an initial effort to bring together available data on SDG health and health-related indicators. In the current absence of official goal-level indicators, summary measures of health such as (healthy) life expectancy are used to provide a general assessment of the situation.

Air pollution levels rising in many of the world’s poorest cities

More than 80% of people living in urban areas that monitor air pollution are exposed to air quality levels that exceed WHO limits. While all regions of the world are affected, populations in low-income cities are the most impacted. According to the latest urban air quality database, 98% of cities in low- and middle income countries with more than 100 000 inhabitants do not meet WHO air quality guidelines. However, in high-income countries, that percentage decreases to 56%.

As per the report published by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in February 2015, 302 polluted river stretches have been identified on 275 rivers based on Bio-chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels, a key indicator of organic pollution. The third country wide assessment of the status of tigers, copredators and their prey, using the refined methodology has shown a country wide 30% increase in tiger numbers in 2014 with an estimated number of 2226 tigers (range 1945-2491) as compared to second assessment done in 2010 with estimated number of 1706 tigers (range 1520-1909). Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in association with State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) / Pollution Control Committees (PCCs) is monitoring air quality, water quality and noise levels across the country under National Air Quality Monitoring Programme (NAMP), National Water Quality Monitoring Programme (NWMP) and National Ambient Noise Monitoring Network (NANMN) respectively. The impact of climate change is also expected in economic viability and production of livestock systems through poor availability of quality feed and fodder, decreased reproductive performance and decline in milk production. Further, ICAR- CRIDA has also mapped 572 districts of the country for their vulnerability to extreme events due to climate change.
