- The Indian wind power industry has witnessed rapid growth and comprises nearly 8 per cent of the country’s total installed generation capacity. The
year 2010-11 was a remarkable one for the industry, which recorded the highest ever annual capacity installations of 2,350 MW. With this, the country’s
total wind-based installed capacity surpassed 14,000 MW and it maintained its position as the world’s fifth largest wind power producer.

- A host of policy and regulatory measures have backed this strong growth. These include the introduction of generation-based incentives (GBIs),
renewable energy certificates (RECs) and access to the short-term power market. In addition, the macro drivers of energy security and climate
change concerns make wind a popular choice among policymakers and developers for diversifying the country’s energy basket.

- With independent power producers taking on a greater role within the industry, project sizes have been increasing, bringing in economies of
scale and creating the demand for higher-end technologies. The manufacturers have responded well to the demand drivers and the annual
production capacity, currently at 7,500 MW, is set to more than double in the next three years.
