Water supply in towns/cities

According to the 58th Round of National Sample Survey, 73.6%
of urban households have access to tap water, 19.6% households have access to
tubewell and hand pump and 5.1% have access to pump. However, there are 11 Nos.
of towns/cities across the country which have no piped water supply
(ANNEXURE-I). There is no town in Tamil
Nadu, where the households do not have access to tap water.

Pollution in rivers

The pollution load on rivers has increased over the years due to rapid urbanisation and industrialization. Domestic sewage is the major source of pollution of rivers besides industrial and other non-point sources of pollution.
