Flood alert in Gujarat

Even as 96 dams in Gujarat were put on high alert following heavy rainfall on the evening of September 11, many of them were full to their capacities, including the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Dam in Kevadia. At least 7,000 people were evacuated in August and September from different parts of the state, according to the latest reports and the Gujarat flood control department.

Fresh development plan for naxal-affected districts

The Centre has decided to modify flagship rural development schemes like Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) to suit the needs of naxal-affected districts.


While the schemes will be made more flexible, funds allocated to them will also increase. The decision was taken at a day-long consultation held by the Central government with the collectors of 60 districts included under the Integrated Action Plan (IAP).

PepsiCo to shell out more for water in Maharashtra

On September 12, the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal filed by PepsiCo India, questioning increased water charges with retrospective effect from 2001. They must now clear Rs 70 lakh as arrears in water bills. A 2009, the Bombay High Court directive had upheld the Maharashtra government'ss decision to charge industries which use water as a raw material (soft drinks, mineral water) a higher rate (ten times the existing) with effect from September 2001. Against this decision, PepsiCo filed the appeal in the Supreme Court.

Jharkhand to share mining profit

State to give 80 per cent of sand mine auction profit to panchayats

THE Jharkhand government has announced it will give 80 per cent of the amount collected from auction of sand mines in the state to block panchayats. This is the first time a state has decided to share business profits with local bodies.

Hemant Soren, deputy chief minister and minister in-charge of the department of mines and geology, made the announcement on August 11. “The decision has been approved by the state Cabinet,” he added.

Onion growers blockade highway; demand revoking export ban

The Union government's decision to ban onion export has not gone down well with farmers. Protests continued in Nashik district of Maharashtra, one of the largest onion growing regions in the country, while farmers blocked the National highway from Mumbai to Agra. The Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) has, meanwhile suspended onion trading for an indefinite period.

'Preserving plant fossil is as important as protecting cultural heritage'

On the biggest challenge facing palaeobotany in India


It is lack of a legislation to conserve fossils. Hence, we are not able to preserve geological and palaeontological heritage of India. Look at China and the US. If a site is declared a natural fossil park in these two countries, you cannot carry out any excavation there without the approval of the government. We need to safeguard our palaeobotanical heritage, just like we do our archaeological heritage.

Saroj Devi's family of six used to spend over Rs 900 every month to buy kerosene for lighting the three lamps in her house. Their village, Lala Teekar, in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh has two rivers passing by and is often called the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of Moradabad. This is because the only access to the village—a narrow rickety road—closes during monsoons, cutting off access to the village.
