UN targets top killers

When heads of state and health ministers gather in New York next week for the first United Nations (UN) high-level summit on non-communicable disease (NCD), they will be presented with some jaw-dropping statistics. According to UN reports released before the meeting, NCDs such as cardiovascular disease and cancer killed 36 million people in 2008, accounting for 63% of all deaths.

Next time you brush your teeth, be careful. Some popular toothpastes and toothpowders in India have high levels of nicotine, a known carcinogen, a study has found.


Researchers at the Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (DIPSAR) tested 10 toothpowders and 24 toothpastes brands. They found large amounts of nicotine in 11 of these non-tobacco products.


The highest amount of nicotine at 18 milligram/gram (mg/g) was found in Colgate Herbal products while 10 mg/g of nicotine was found in Neem Tulsi brand.

Land bill gets diluted on way to Parliament

On September 7, a draft of the Land Acquisition and Resettlement and Rehabilitation Bill of 2011was tabled in Parliament which was different from the one published in July for public comments. The changes in the draft now seem to favour agencies acquiring land rather than the land owners. Certain features offering safeguards and better compensation to farmers have been diluted, say activists.

Nepal needs SEZ booster for its floundering economy

It is eight years now since the Nepal government mooted the idea of introducing special economic zones (SEZs) in the country to boost its sagging exports and attract foreign investment. To this end, the SEZ Bill was tabled in Parliament two years ago, but it is yet to be approved. As a result, SEZs remain a concept on paper.

Court orders water supply scheme for Khurpatal

It brought at least some relief to the residents of villages downhill of Khurpatal, a valley near Nainital, when the Uttarakhand High Court ordered the district administration to formulate a water supply scheme for upcoming colonies in the hill station, growing into a bustling town. The scheme should be formulated in such a way that springs in the downhill areas are not affected. Until then, the administration should supply water from a spring flowing through Khurpatal village, the court order in July said.

Sri Lanka commissions first solar power plant

Marking a milestone in renewable energy, Sri Lanka, has commissioned its first solar power plant. It will add 500 kilowatt to the National Grid and generate 2,300 units of electricity daily. The power plant located in Hambantota in southern Sri Lanka will cater to electricity needs of over 3,000 rural families. The annual power generation is expected to be 839,500 kilowatt hours.
