Sea-ice minimum is not a one-off

7368

There is heated discussion over whether or not this year's seasonal sea-ice minimum in the Arctic constitutes a record (see http://go.nature.com/bmydx7 and, for example, http://go.nature.com/286mdp). But the debate misses the crucial point: this year's minimum is evidence that the unprecedented seasonal minimum of 2007 was not a one-off. (Correspondence)

Tiered pricing - the concept of selling drugs and vaccines in developing countries at prices systematically lower than in industrialized countries - has received widespread support from industry, policymakers, civil society, and academics as a way to improve access to medicines for the poor. We carried out case studies based on a review of international drug price developments for antiretrovirals, artemisinin combination therapies, drug-resistant tuberculosis medicines, liposomal amphotericin B (for visceral leishmaniasis), and pneumococcal vaccines.

Reconciling research and implementation in micro health insurance experiments in India: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Microinsurance or Community-Based Health Insurance is a promising healthcare financing mechanism, which is increasingly applied to aid rural poor persons in low-income countries. Robust empirical evidence on the causal relations between Community-Based Health Insurance and healthcare utilisation, financial protection and other areas is scarce and necessary. This paper contains a discussion of the research design of three Cluster Randomised Controlled Trials in India to measure the impact of Community-Based Health Insurance on several outcomes.

Critical thresholds and tangible targets for ecosystem-based management of coral reef fisheries

Publication Date:
11/10/2011

Sustainably managing ecosystems is challenging, especially for complex systems such as coral reefs. This study develops critical reference points for sustainable management by using a large empirical dataset on the coral reefs of the western Indian Ocean to investigate associations between levels of target fish biomass (as an indicator of fishing intensity) and eight metrics of ecosystem state. These eight ecological metrics each exhibited specific thresholds along a continuum of fishable biomass ranging from heavily fished sites to old fisheries closures.

Solar mission continues to lure private players

Project proposals total 2,500 MW solar energy in second batch of bidding. Launched last year, the ambitious Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission of the government (JNNSM) continues to lure private players. For the 350 MW of capacity proposed in the second batch of the phase one of the solar mission, requests have come pouring for a total of 2,500 MW capacity. The first phase of the solar mission running from 2010 to 2013 has a target of connecting 1,000 MW solar capacity to the national electricity grid. The first phase has two batches.
