Monitoring of seasonal snow cover in Bhutan using remote sensing technique

10
1364-1370
Publication Date:
25/11/2011

All major rivers in Bhutan depend on snowmelt for discharge. Therefore, changes in snow cover due to climate change can influence distribution and availability of water. However, information about distribution of seasonal snow cover in Bhutan is not available. The MODIS snow product was used to study snow cover status and trends in Bhutan.

Bioremediation potential of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) for decontamination of cadmium in soil

10
1359-1363
Publication Date:
25/11/2011

Greenhouse pot culture studies were conducted to evaluate the bioremediation potential of spinach for removal of cadmium. The results indicated that spinach was able to take up cadmium in substantial quantity in the shoot. There were no visual cadmium toxicity effects on spinach and no significant reduction in the dry matter yield up to 20 μg g–1 cadmium. Significant growth retardation of fenugreek crop grown after spinach was observed at all the levels of cadmium, with no cadmium uptake in the shoot.

Antimalarial effect of Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook.f. & Thoms and Cissampelos pareira L. on Plasmodium berghei

10
1356-1358
Publication Date:
25/11/2011

Cissampelos pareira L. and Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook.f. & Thoms inhibited the propagation of rodent parasite Plasmodium berghei in vivo. In a typical fourday experiment, the BALB/c mice were administered with ethanol extracts of Cissampelos pareira L. and Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook.f. & Thoms. The parasitaemian in untreated control group ranged between 17.31% and 30.02% whereas the root extracts of Cissampelos pareira L. and stem extracts of Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook.f. & Thoms resulted in inhibition of Plasmodium berghei significantly.

Epiphytic orchid diversity in farmer-managed Soppinabetta forests of Western Ghats: implications for conservation

10
1337-1346
Publication Date:
25/11/2011

Conservation of biodiversity in managed landscapes is of critical importance due to the rapid degradation and loss of primary habitat in the tropics. Soppinabetta forests are farmer-managed, fragmented evergreen forests of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot in India. We hypothesized that these forests have immense importance in conservation of epiphytic orchid flora, although management intensity may differentially affect the diversity. Orchid diversity of
the Soppinabetta forests of two degrees of management (sustained Soppinabetta, N = 11; degraded Soppinabetta,

Economic impact assessment of the Agrometeorological Advisory Service of India

10
1296-1310
Publication Date:
25/11/2011

A pilot study was conducted to assess the economic impact of weather forecast-based advisories issued to 15 of the 127 Agrometeorological Advisory Service (AAS) units of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. Six seasons comprising three Kharif (summer) and three Rabi (winter) during 2003–2007 were chosen. The major crops chosen for the study included food grains, oilseeds, cash crops, fruit and vegetable crops. The sample set consisted of 80 farmers, comprising 40 responding and 40 non-responding farmers.

First photographic evidences of two rare cats from Pakke Tiger Reserve, western Arunachal Pradesh

10
1284-1286
Publication Date:
25/11/2011

The Asiatic golden cat and marbled cat are popularly called small cat species among the wild felids. Both these cats are found distributed in the South East Asian region and come from a common lineage of bay cats and inhabit moist evergreen forests. They are placed in the ‘Near threatened’ and ‘Vulnerable’ category respectively, according to the IUCN. In India, the golden cat as well as the marbled cat are found in the North East where they occur mainly in forested hills and foothills of the Lesser Himalayas.

Historical and future seismicity near Jaitapur , India

10
1275-1281
Publication Date:
25/11/2011

Although India has a long written record, the shaking intensity of few damaging earthquakes that occurred before AD 1800, can be quantified. Since reliable estimates of future shaking near planned nuclear power plants depend on the extrapolation of historical earthquake data spanning many centuries, estimates of seismic risk to the planned Jaitapur nuclear power plant assessed from a short dataset of only the past few centuries, may not, therefore, represent the true risk to the plant.

Common biases that plague conservation assessments in the Western Ghats

10
1271-1274
Publication Date:
25/11/2011

Conservation assessments are critical to the long-term survival of species, communities, ecosystems, landscapes and vast ecological regions. The Western Ghats is amongst the globally recognized biodiversity hotspots that are in dire need of a regional conservation plan. The ecological region is known for high levels of endemism, especially amongst vertebrate animals. Not less than 35% of the 1,282 species of vertebrates known in the region are endemic.

Ramsar Convention and India

10
1266-1268
Publication Date:
25/11/2011

The Wetland ecosystem in India is spread over a wide range of varied climatic conditions, from the wetlands in
cold Jammu and Kashmir to hot and humid conditions in Peninsular India; thus there is a great diversity of these
wetlands. Many of these wetlands are unique with respect to biodiversity, scenic beauty, shelter of migratory birds,
resident avifauna, etc. Under the conservation of wetlands in India, several wetlands have been recognized that are a
part of National Parks and Sanctuaries.
