Striking a balance: Socioeconomic development and conservation in grassland through community-based zoning

The goal of preserving nature is often in conflict with economic development and the aspirations of the rural poor. Nowhere is this more striking than in native grasslands, which have been extensively converted until a mere fraction of their original extent remains. This is not surprising; grasslands flourish in places coveted by humans, primed for agriculture, plantations, and settlements that nearly always trump conservation efforts.

A new world malaria map: Plasmodium falciparum endemicity in 2010

Transmission intensity affects almost all aspects of malaria epidemiology and the impact of malaria on human populations. Maps of transmission intensity are necessary to identify populations at different levels of risk and to evaluate objectively options for disease control. To remain relevant operationally, such maps must be updated frequently. Following the first global effort to map Plasmodium falciparum malaria endemicity in 2007, this paper describes the generation of a new world map for the year 2010.

Rice consumption contributes to arsenic exposure in US women

Emerging data indicate that rice consumption may lead to potentially harmful arsenic exposure. However, few human data are available, and virtually none exist for vulnerable periods such as pregnancy. Here we document a positive association between rice consumption and urinary arsenic excretion, a biomarker of recent arsenic exposure, in 229 pregnant women. At a 6-mo prenatal visit, we collected a urine sample and 3-d dietary record for water, fish/seafood, and rice.

The toxic effects of cigarette additives. Philip Morris' project mix reconsidered: An analysis of documents released through litigation

Publication Date:

In 2009, the promulgation of US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tobacco regulation focused attention on cigarette flavor additives. The tobacco industry had prepared for this eventuality by initiating a research program focusing on additive toxicity. The objective of this study was to analyze Philip Morris' Project MIX as a case study of tobacco industry scientific research being positioned strategically to prevent anticipated tobacco control regulations.

Worldwide incidence of malaria in 2009: Estimates, time trends, and a critique of methods

12

Publication Date:
20/12/2011

Richard Cibulskis and colleagues present estimates of the worldwide incidence of malaria in 2009, together with a critique of different estimation methods, including those based on risk maps constructed from surveys of parasite prevalence, and those based on routine case reports compiled by health ministries.

Estimating the burden of Malaria: The need for improved surveillance

12
1-2
Publication Date:
20/12/2011

Over the past decade there has been a massive scale-up of antimalarial interventions including insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), artemisinin-combination treatments (ACTs), and rapid-diagnostic tests (RDTs), and in selected areas, indoor residual spraying. This scale-up is beginning to have a significant impact on the burden of malaria in many areas worldwide. In the most recent World Malaria Report, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that in 2010 there was an 8% decrease in the number of cases (compared with 2005) and a 21% decrease in the number of deaths (compared with 2000).

Post-Kala-azar Dermal Leishmaniasis in Nepal: A retrospective cohort study (2000–2010)

Publication Date:
20/12/2011

Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is a cutaneous complication appearing after treatment of visceral leishmaniasis, and PKDL patients are considered infectious to sand flies and may therefore play a role in the transmission of VL. We estimated the risk and risk factors of PKDL in patients with past VL treatment in south-eastern Nepal.

Population dynamics of Aedes aegypti and Dengue as influenced by weather and human behavior in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Publication Date:
20/12/2011

Previous studies on the influence of weather on Aedes aegypti dynamics in Puerto Rico suggested that rainfall was a significant driver of immature mosquito populations and dengue incidence, but mostly in the drier areas of the island. We conducted a longitudinal study of Ae. aegypti in two neighborhoods of the metropolitan area of San Juan city, Puerto Rico where rainfall is more uniformly distributed throughout the year. We assessed the impacts of rainfall, temperature, and human activities on the temporal dynamics of adult Ae. aegypti and oviposition.

Anaemia in low-income and middle-income countries

9809

Anaemia aff ects a quarter of the global population, including 293 million (47%) children younger than 5 years and
468 million (30%) non-pregnant women. In addition to anaemia’s adverse health consequences, the economic eff ect
of anaemia on human capital results in the loss of billions of dollars annually. In this paper, we review the
epidemiology, clinical assessment, pathophysiology, and consequences of anaemia in low-income and middleincome countries. Our analysis shows that anaemia is disproportionately concentrated in low socioeconomic groups,
