Contentious observations of Pleistocene shoreline features on the tectonically stable islands of Bermuda and the Bahamas have suggested that sea level about 400,000 years ago was more than 20 metres higher than it is today. Geochronologic and geomorphic evidence indicates that these features formed during interglacial marine isotope stage (MIS) 11, an unusually long interval of warmth during the ice age.

The ongoing controversy over the EU's plan to include aviation in its Emissions Trading System (ETS) ramped up another notch this week, with India reportedly planning to urge its airlines to boycott the scheme. Brussels, meanwhile, continues to stand firm in support of the ETS in the absence of a global agreement on aviation emissions.

The US Commerce Department will begin imposing duties on solar panel imports from China, after finding that Chinese solar manufacturers receive unfair government support. Though the announced duties were far below the complainants' requests, the decision is still expected to increase trade tensions between Beijing and Washington, which have already been running high in recent weeks.

With the declining competitiveness of tea estates, smallholdings have emerged as a major producer of tea in Assam. Yet despite higher productivity and lower outsourced labour costs, and regardless of market conditions, tea smallholdings remain at the mercy of estate processing factories in price determination. The Sri Lankan model of price fixation and regulatory support can prove useful in this sector, but the current acreage defi nition for smallholdings needs to be lowered.

A decade ago, Chandra Pradhani, a Paraja tribal of Nuaguda village in Kundra block of Odisha's Koraput district, would migrate to neighbouring Andhra Pradesh to earn a living as a brick kiln worker. He no longer does this. Today, he is feted by the nation. He was one of the tribal farmers honoured by prime minister Manmohan Singh at the 99th Science Congress held in Bhubaneswar in January. It is the hard labour and traditional agricultural techniques of tribal families that have helped put Koraput on the map of world agriculture.

A number of solar mission projects operational only on paper. The Government has decided to act tough with 14 companies which did not commission their solar power projects in time. NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN), the power trading arm of the state-owned National Thermal Power Corporation, penalised them by encashing a part of their bank guarantees. These erring firms are among the 28 that were awarded solar photovoltaic projects under batch one of first phase of Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). The date of commissioning of these plants was January 9.
