To examine the effects of C and water additions on soil microbial properties and plant growth, we conducted an experiment lasting two years in a temperate steppe of northeastern China. We found that soil C and water additions significantly affected microbial properties and stimulated plant growth. Carbon addition significantly increased soil microbial biomass and activity but had a limited effect on microbial community structure.

Radionuclide Analysis on Bamboos following the Fukushima Nuclear Accident

In response to contamination from the recent Fukushima nuclear accident, we conducted radionuclide analysis on bamboos sampled from six sites within a 25 to 980 km radius of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Maximum activity concentrations of radiocesium 134Cs and 137Cs in samples from Fukushima city, 65 km away from the Fukushima Daiichi plant, were in excess of 71 and 79 kBq/kg, dry weight (DW), respectively. In Kashiwa city, 195 km away from the Fukushima Daiichi, the sample concentrations were in excess of 3.4 and 4.3 kBq/kg DW, respectively.

ICT - A rapid, innovative but simple technique for malaria diagnosis

Early, proper and accurate diagnosis plays an important role in case of malaria. Usually malarial diagnosis is done using clinical criteria and/or microscopy. Immunochromatographic tests (ICTs) are now a days widely available and recognized as an alternative method for diagnosis of the malaria. In this study we performed microscopy i. e. Field’s stain and ICT with the help of ParaHIT Total for 897 samples, collected from various clinical laboratories of Valsad district, Gujarat, India.

Health insurance is fast emerging as an important mechanism to finance health care needs of the people. The need for an insurance system that works on the basic principle of pooling of risks of unexpected costs of persons falling ill and needing hospitalization by charging premium from a wider population base of the same community. In the present scenario the annual expenditure on health in India amounts to about $7.00 in rural areas and $10.00 in urban areas per person, majority of care being provided by the private sector.
