Ministry indifferent to illegal mining

Shows cold response to recommendations on curbing illegal mining of iron, manganese

THE UNION Ministry of Mines has responded coldly to the recommendations of the M B Shah Commission on curbing illegal mining of iron and manganese ores. In its response, filed in December last year, the ministry also seemed at loggerheads with the state mining departments over their suggestion to ban export of the minerals to check illegal mining. The commission was set up by the Centre in November 2010 to look into the growing illegal mining of the minerals and suggest remedial measures.

The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are a key, integral component of the stability, sustainability and functioning of ecosystems. In this study, we characterised the AMF biodiversity in a native vegetation soil and in a soil cultivated with Jatropha curcas or Ricinus communis, in a tropical system in Guantanamo (Cuba), in order to verify if a change of land use to biofuel plant production had any effect on the AMF communities.

Air density 2.7 billion years ago limited to less than twice modern levels by fossil raindrop imprints

7394

According to the ‘Faint Young Sun’ paradox, during the late Archaean eon a Sun approximately 20% dimmer warmed the early Earth such that it had liquid water and a clement climate. Explanations for this phenomenon have invoked a denser atmosphere that provided warmth by nitrogen pressure broadening or enhanced greenhouse gas concentrations. Such solutions are allowed by geochemical studies and numerical investigations that place approximate concentration limits on Archaean atmospheric gases, including methane, carbon dioxide and oxygen.

Ash flies in the face of power plan

ODISHA is set to become a powerhouse of the country. Over the past seven years, the state has signed several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with public and private firms to produce 50,000 MW thermal power. The state is proud of this achievement, but experts are concerned over an environmental threat—fly ash, the notorious waste product of coal-fired plants, known to ruin agricultural land.
Odisha may witness production of about 100 million tonnes fly ash annually if all the thermal power projects become operational.

Developmental exposure to a toxic spill compromises long-term reproductive performance in a wild, long-lived bird: The White Stork (Ciconia ciconia)

Exposure to environmental contaminants may result in reduced reproductive success and long-lasting population declines in vertebrates. Emerging data from laboratory studies on model species suggest that certain life-stages, such as development, should be of special concern. However, detailed investigations of long-term consequences of developmental exposure to environmental chemicals on breeding performance are currently lacking in wild populations of long-lived vertebrates.

Proliferation of hdroelectric dams in the Andean Amazon and implications for Andes-Amazon connectivity

Due to rising energy demands and abundant untapped potential, hydropower projects are rapidly increasing in the Neotropics. This is especially true in the wet and rugged Andean Amazon, where regional governments are prioritizing new hydroelectric dams as the centerpiece of long-term energy plans. However, the current planning for hydropower lacks adequate regional and basin-scale assessment of potential ecological impacts.
