Protecting endangered species: Do the main legislative tools work?

1-7
Publication Date:
02/05/2012

It is critical to assess the effectiveness of the tools used to protect endangered species. The main tools enabled under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) to promote species recovery are funding, recovery plan development and critical habitat designation. Earlier studies sometimes found that statistically significant effects of these tools could be detected, but they have not answered the question of whether the effects were large enough to be biologically meaningful.

DNA barcoding simplifies environmental risk assessment of genetically modified crops in biodiverse regions

Transgenes encoding for insecticidal crystal (Cry) proteins from the soil-dwelling bacterium Bacillus Thuringiensis have been widely introduced into Genetically Modified (GM) crops to confer protection against insect pests. Concern that these transgenes may also harm beneficial or otherwise valued insects (so-called Non Target Organisms, NTOs) represents a major element of the Environmental Risk Assessments (ERAs) used by all countries prior to commercial release.

Ecological implications of extreme events: Footprints of the 2010 earthquake along the Chilean coast

Publication Date:
02/05/2012

Deciphering ecological effects of major catastrophic events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, storms and fires, requires rapid interdisciplinary efforts often hampered by a lack of pre-event data. Using results of intertidal surveys conducted shortly before and immediately after Chile's 2010 Mw 8.8 earthquake along the entire rupture zone (ca. 34–38°S), we provide the first quantification of earthquake and tsunami effects on sandy beach ecosystems. Our study incorporated anthropogenic coastal development as a key design factor.

Publication Date:
01/05/2012

The present study was conducted for the time period of one year (April, 2009- March 2010) with an aim to find out the physico-chemical nature of water at different sites of River Jehlum in order to access the physical properties and chemical nature of its water and the impact of site/s on their concentration. Three sites were selected for the study purpose and the samples were collected on monthly bases. The samples thus collected were processed for the detection of metals with their relative concentrations following the standard methods.

Objective vs. self-reported physical activity and sedentary time: Effects of Measurement method on relationships with risk biomarkers

Imprecise measurement of physical activity variables might attenuate estimates of the beneficial effects of activity on health-related outcomes. The researchers aimed to compare the cardiometabolic risk factor dose-response relationships for physical activity and sedentary behaviour between accelerometer- and questionnaire-based activity measures.

Fifty years of dengue in India

5

Dengue is the most important mosquito-borne, human viral disease in many tropical and sub-tropical areas. In India the disease has been essentially described in the form of case series. We reviewed the epidemiology of dengue in India to improve understanding of its evolution in the last 50 years and support the development of effective local prevention and control measures.
