Quantifying spatio-temporal variations in heavy metal enormity of groundwaters from Ankaleshwar area

Heavy metal dispersion in groundwaters of Ankaleshwar Industrial Estate, south Gujarat displays colossal temporal variability in both degree and space. In order to facilitate the quantitative measure for site-specific variations, Normalized Difference Dispersal Index (NDDI) maps for five en ironmentally sensitive heavy metals (Ni, Zn, Cu, Mn and Pb) were generated by clutching geochemical analyses and GIS-based raster images.

Low energy nuclear reaction research Global scenario

This article reviews highlights of low energy nuclear reaction research, part of the field of condensed matter nuclear science. The field evolved from the so-called cold fusion discovery of two electrochemists, Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons at the University of Utah. Since the announcement of their discovery in 1989, more than 200 researchers in 13 nations have confirmed and expanded the set of experimental evidence that provides the validation for this new field of science.

Comment: Why I had to walk out of farming talks

198

Four years ago, the International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD) was born. This ground-breaking exercise brought together government, non-governmental organisations and industry representatives, including Syngenta, to assess world agriculture. Potential authors were nominated and selected - and I was among them. All the authors were expected to draw on their own experience and interpretations of the available evidence, including that taken from peer-reviewed literature, but to leave their affiliations behind.

Editorial: Gambling on the rainforests

198

A venture capital company has bought the rights to ecosystem services from a 370,000-hectare rainforest reserve in Guyana. In return for its investment, London-based Canopy Capital will receive a percentage of any income that might one day be made from the reserve's ecosystem services. The company's hope is that these services will eventually become tradable commodities in the same way that carbon is today. Once Canopy Capital has recouped its investment, 80 per cent of further profits will go back to the reserve.
