Raised bed farming - Reviving traditional technology

In order to address some issues faced by small farm holders, Agrarian Development Institute for Sustenance and Improved Livelihood (ADISIL), a Madurai based NGO, with the support of Svaraj, has revived an innovative, traditional technology, i.e. raised bed farming. Raised bed farming is the practice of using complex terraces of elevated earth to grow vegetables, it is done simply by forming a bed of topsoil that lies about 6 inches to 10 inches above the rest of the ground. Generally this bed is 3 feet wide and 8 feet to 10 feet in length.

Effect of application of biofertilizers, Azospirillum, phosphate-solubilising bacteria (PSB) and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi was studied in a factoral experiment on production of planting propagules (stumps) of teak in nursery. Seed germination was maximum in Azospirillum treatment followed by its combination with AM and PSB after two months.

Long-term impacts of drinking chlorinated water on the incidence of cancers and miscarriages were assessed in a population-based cross sectional study conducted in the two campus communities of IIT Kanpur (IITK) and IIT Kharagpur (IITKgp). IITK has been using untreated groundwater since the community was established in 1963, while IITKgp has been using chlorinated water for more than 30 years.
