The contribution of Chinese exports to climate change

A new study by Chris Weber et al. estimates that up to a third of China's CO2 emissions are embodied in exports. The emissions calculations include both combustion of fuels and industrial processes in the supply chain to produce Chinese exports. 27% of China's export emissions are attributed to the U.S., 19% to the EU-27, 14% to the remaining Annex B countries, and 40% to the non-annex B developing world. Improvements to China's inefficient and coal-based electricity system would be good for everybody.

North American ice-sheet dynamics and the onset of 100,000-year glacial cycles

7206

The onset of major glaciations in the Northern Hemisphere about 2.7 million years ago was most probably induced by climate cooling during the late Pliocene epoch. These glaciations, during which the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets successively expanded and retreated, are superimposed on this long-term climate trend, and have been linked to variations in the Earth's orbital parameters.

Oil and gas projects in the Western Amazon: Threats to wilderness, biodiversity, and indigenous peoples

The western Amazon is the most biologically rich part of the Amazon basin and is home to a great diversity of indigenous ethnic groups, including some of the world's last uncontacted peoples living in voluntary isolation. Unlike the eastern Brazilian Amazon, it is still a largely intact ecosystem. Underlying this landscape are large reserves of oil and gas, many yet untapped. The growing global demand is leading to unprecedented exploration and development in the region.

The limited availability of fossil fuel sources, worldwide rising energy demands and anticipated climate changes attributed to an increase of greenhouse gasses are important driving forces for finding alternative energy sources. One approach to meeting the increasing energy demands and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is by large-scale substitution of petrochemically derived transport fuels by the use of carbon dioxide-neutral biofuels, such as ethanol derived from lignocellulosic material.

Present gold-producing centres of India have witnessed ancient and modern mining activities. The presence of wood logs, ash, charcoal and pottery in ancient gold mines of Kolar, Hutti and Uti suggests fire setting was the main mode of gold exploitation of ancient miners.

The area of climate change has now grown into an industry; international conferences abound, held most often in exotic locations; treaties and protocols are promoted by some countries, rejected by others; Nobel Peace Prizes are awarded to the most visible campaigners in the battle to control global warming; and the scientific literature is beginning to see the emergence of a new discipline termed

Cotton hybrids expressing various endotoxins of B. thruringiensis, per se fitting into genetic or host-plant resistance and biological tools of integrated pest management (IPM) have given a new dimension and impetus to the IPM philosophy that aims to reduce the massive reliance on insecticides for pest management on the conventional or non-Bt cotton.
